Abstract


The sterilizing effects of the toothbrush sterilizing device with ultraviolet ray alone system, the device with an ultraviolet ray lamp and an air circulating system, the device with an ultraviolet ray lamp and a bioceramic heat generator, the compact device with an ultraviolet ray lamp and a bioceramic heat generator were measured. Materials were the toothbrushes collected immediately after brushing. Collected toothbrushes were vortexed in the distilled water. The precultured broth was obtained by inoculation of the vortexed water at the BHI(added 0.5% polypeptone) broth. After precultured broth was inoculated at the BHI(added 0.5% polypeptone) agar medium, colonies were counted and the total number of cells of toothbrush was calculated. New sterilized toothbrushes were put in the sterilized water with precultured broth, and bacterial cells adhered to the toothbrushes. The toothbrushes with cells were sterilized again in the sterilizing devices by 30 sec, 1 min, 5 min, 10 min, and 30 min. The sterilized toothbrushes were vortexed in the sterilized water, and vortexed water was inoculated at the nutrient agar medium and cells were cultured. The death rates of bacteria were calculated by counting the cultured colonies.
The obtained results were as follows:
1. The early death rate of bacteria by the early stage at 30 sec and 1 min was the highest at the device with an ultraviolet ray lamp and a bioceramic heat generator and the compact device with an ultraviolet ray lamp and a bioceramic heat generator, and the lowest at the device with ultraviolet ray alone system.
2. The death rates of bacteria by the devices with an ultraviolet ray lamp at 10 min over were all 96% over.
The sterilizing effects of the devices with an ultraviolet ray lamp were evaluated to be generally good.
